DSC02012The village Pitsidia is located about 70 km south of the city of Heraklion. It has about 700 inhabitants and belongs to the same community as Matala in Messara valley.

It is built at an altitude of 80 meters just a short distance from the sea. More specifically 1,7 km from the bay of Kommos and 2 km from the Bay of Matala.

It is the oldest village in the area and owes its current name to Nikiforos Fokas soldiers. Soldiers of Nikiforos Fokas came from Pisidia in southern Asia Minor and were brave fighters. They gave, then, the name of their country, Pisidia, to the village.

The clean and neat accommodations and family taverns that operate in Pitsidia, keep the quality high and makes it worth visiting.
